History of Interior
Architecture & Furnishings

Level 1 (beginner)

The first course of History of Interior Architecture & Furnishings will enable students to recognize specific interior space features unique to historical periods from Antiquity through the Renaissance to the Neoclassical age. Each week students learn the characteristic forms, materials, decorative motifs, and techniques of design styles that reflect the period’s identity.

The second History course continues with the development of interior architecture and furnishings from the 19th century onward. Students examine how interiors frame our human existence and define our identities. By examining the progression of interior design styles, students become conscious of the way all interior spaces are shaped by cultural meaning that influences our contemporary living.

Examples showcase student research into a variety of historical interior design styles and furnishings and creative interpretations of Rose windows.
